Patriotic Commission Minutes 03-19-2012
SOUTH WINDSOR PATRIOTIC COMMISSION
March 19, 2012


The meeting was called to order at 7:28 p.m. by Chairperson Kent Carlson, followed by the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

ATTENDANCE:
Roger Anderson, Peter Anthony. Herb Asplund,  Gene Botteron, Kent Carlson, Billy Carroll, , Teri Dickey-Gaignat, Len Glasser, Bob Hornish, Daria Plummer (alt.), Art Sladyk (alt.), James Throwe..

MINUTES:
The minutes of February 21, 2012 were approved with the following corrections: Bill Carroll was present; and the reworded sentence approved for the category Anything for the Good of the Committee: Teri stated she wished the soldiers’ statue at park entrance was bigger. Motion: R. Anderson/T. Dickey-Gaignat.

TREASURER’S REPORT: Presented by Kent Carlson; approved by consensus.
  • Expenses for Evening at the Park discussed.  
  • Petting Zoo, 2 hours, $450.
  • Bounce House remains the same as last year at $750.
  • Signs will be reused as much as possible;  signage should come in at <$1,000.
CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:

Essay Contest, Winners announced
  • K-2 (three art submission entries): First: Meghan Serignese, OH; Second: Michael Ngo, OH; Third, Sophie Finer, W.
  • 3-5: First: Kayla Brown, PV [gr.5]; Second: Autumn Colburn, PRS [gr. 4]; Third [tie]: Sierra Bowman, W [gr.4] and Grace Eaton, PV [gr.5]
  • 6-12: First, Gabriella Silva, TE [gr. 7]; Second: Mary-Kate Harper, TE [gr. 8]; Third: Vivian Ngo, TE [gr.6].
Details on follow through:
  • Roger will handle the certificates for the winners and letters to all participants
  • Memorial Day ceremony: Winners will ride in cars and be introduced at the ceremony
  • Winners will come before the Town Council in early June to share posters and essays.
Thoughts for next year:
  • Open up to all SW students, homeschooled, private schools;
  • Appeal to Boy and Girl Scouts;
  • Work on greater outreach for public relations;
  • Try for one last year and if results are meager, consider dropping the contest.


Evening In The Park:  May 19, 2012
  • Inflatables have been secured
  • Face Painting arranged
  • Band confirmation is pending
  • Kent to meet with town officials

Memorial Day Parade: May 28, 2012  (Len Glasser and Art Sladyk are working together on details of the parade)
  • There will be no flyover[s]
  • Speaker confirmed
  • Correspondence will be sent for parade and ceremony
  • Parade route and police concerns will be reviewed and handled
  • Chair is the person who makes the “inclement weather” call
  • Flags are in for the ceremony
  • Electronic data catalog being considered for names of all veterans, including Merchant Marines), buried in South Windsor
  • Ed Kashata’s name submitted for parade Marshall
  • Bricks for sidewalk not standard size; 40-50 more being ordered so that the size needed will be available (Bob Moeller assisted in brick ordering).
Flag Day Ceremony:  June 16, 2012
  • Peter confirmed that the flags would be burned on June 16, behind Firehouse #1.
  • Additional flags collected for burning.
Veterans Day Parade:  November 4, 2012
Not sure of the date because Veterans Day falls on a Sunday and there might be an issue with the bands and local ceremonies.

Veterans Day Ceremony:  November 11, 2012
No report. We are awaiting the decision as to when the parade will be held, either Sunday, November 4 or 11.

Veterans in the Schools: Date uncertain, as Veterans Day is a Sunday.

Wreaths Across America: December 15, 2012.
Art Sladyk shared copies of the American Legion letter about South Windsor’s participation in Wreaths Across America.

OLD BUSINESS:

  • Cary Prague assisting in the procurement of pins for Commission members; jackets are costly and are not being considered at this time.
  • Commission membership full at 10 regular members and two alternates; all terms expire on 12/31 of the year each person’s term is up.
  • Peter Anthony working on the wall for VMP(behind the monument space); as donations are expected, Peter volunteered to coordinate the collection of the funds.
  • Ray Favareau, Parks/Recreation Director, working with us to see if the town can build the three foot wall that will be dedicated to all the military branches.
  • Matt Galligan in favor of the proposal
  • Area in question will allow for flat ground and will be an enhancement to programs, especially for the color guard at ceremonies.
  • Kent Carlson will handle the PR.
ANYTHING FOR THE GOOD OF THE COMMITTEE:
  • Teri complimented Kent Carlson on the Patriotic Commission page and summary that appears in the summer Parks/Recreation catalog.
  • SW committee/commission rosters not updated for distribution at this time.
  • Insurance clarification presented by Peter Anthony. Private insurance held by a veteran pays first; VA insurance is secondary insurance.

The next meeting will be held Monday, April 16, at 7:30.
